- Product Highlights
- In the presence of water, the methoxy groups of Dynasylan® 1189 hydrolyze to form reactive silanol groups which can bond to a variety of inorganic substrates.
- The organophilic n- butylamino group of Dynasylan® 1189 can react with a suitable polymer.
- The hydrolysis of Dynasylan® 1189 in water takes place by acid catalysis (e.g. acetic acid at a pH of 3).
- To achieve solubility in organic solvents 2-4 wt.-% of water per wt.-% of Dynasylan® 1189 should be added. After stirring for 5 hours the solutions are ready for use.
- Examples of suitable inorganic substrates are glass, glass fibers, glass wool, wollastonite and kaolin.
- Dynasylan® 1189 may be used with such polymers as epoxy, polyurethanes, PA, PBT, EVA, modified PP and silicones. In particular, Dynasylan® 1189 is a very effective coupling agent for thermoplastics. Superior mechanical properties can be achieved in reinforced MAA-modified PE or polypropylene matrices as well as polyamide.
- Dynasylan® 1189 especially leads to improvement of the impact strength of polyamide.
- Dynasylan® 1189 treated fibers and fillers deliver superior performance over standard aminosilanes in challenging environments.
- Dynasylan® 1189 can be used as an endcapper for polyurethanes (isocyanatoprepolymer). In adhesives and sealants, Dynasylan® 1189 acts as an adhesion promoter, primarily to functionalize polymers with aminoreactive groups, for example isocyanate pre-polymers.
- This function- alization with Dynasylan® 1189 leads to new and environmentally-friendly mois- ture curable binders which can be pro- cessed into adhesives and sealants with innovative property profiles.
- In addition, the trialkoxysilicon function in Dynasylan® 1189 guarantees sufficiently quick cur- ing and high crosslinking density in the resulting end product.
- Accelerates the production of silane- terminated PU binders (basis polymers) and thus their adhesives and sealants.
- Reacts quickly and completely with free isocyanate groups to form hydro-phobic, thermally stable urea groups.
- Produces high yields of very good, reproducible and mostly colorless polymers with low viscosity.
- Causes no side reactions and no precuring undesirable for PU chemistry.
- Efficient polar adhesion promoter with integrated non-polar alkyl group, results in adhesives and sealants with extremely high elasticity.
- Rapid reaction with NCO groups, also without a catalyst.
- Urea structure protected against hydrolysis through the butyl group.

- as a high flexible adhesion promoter in SMP-systems.
The most important product effects that can be achieved using Dynasylan® 1189 include:
- flexural strength, tensile strength, impact strength and modulus of elasticity
- improved moisture and corrosion resistance Dynasylan® 1189 can also provide
Improvements in processing properties, such as
- adhesion
- filler dispersion
- rheological behavior: reduction in viscosity
- higher filler loading
- Processing
- For substrate pretreatments (inorganic fibers and fillers) Dynasylan® 1189 can be applied as a primer as a constituent of an aqueous size or solution, neat or added to the polymer as an additive.
- For substrate pretreatment a concentration of approx. 0.5-2 percent is recommended.
- Higher concentrations (1-5 wt.-%) achieve chemical modification by reaction with suitable functional monomers or polymers, for example those containing isocyanate groups.

Technical Details & Test Data
- Dynasylan® 1189 Test Data Information
- The challenge: Bonding dissimilar and/or flexible substrates is always challenging for end users. They need an adhesive solution that exhibits high flexibility and long-term performance.
- The solution: Dynasylan® 1189 is an accompanied adhesion promoter for moisture-curable SMP-based adhesives and sealants. When exposed to moisture and incorporated into the final siloxane network, Dynasylan® 1189 exhibits specifically high flexibilities. Further important side effects of formulating Dynasylan® 1189 are better chemical and moisture resistance of the finished products. Moreover, Dynasylan® 1189 is used to functionalize- polymers with amino-reactive groups such as isocyanate pre-polymers. This functionalization results in new and environmentally friendly moisture-curable binders.
- High Flexibility for Adhesives and Sealants
- As shown in the graph below, a STPU sealant formulated with Dynasylan® 1189 exhibits a low modulus (100%) indicating that the sealant is not rigid:

- In addition, thanks to Dynasylan® 1189, the final STPU sealant showed a high elongation at break highlighting the deformation capacity of the sealant:

- Improved Moisture Resistance
- Dynasylan® 1189 enables formulators to keep adhesives or sealants overall performance (adhesion and other) even when they are exposed to a humid environment.
- As an example, Dynasylan® 1189 helps to improve the shear resistance of a STPU sealant even when a joint is immersed 6 days in water:

- Enhanced Chemical Resistance
Not only when exposed to humid environments but also when in contact with harsh chemicals, adhesives or sealants formulated with Dynasylan® 1189 maintain their performance. When used in STPU sealants, Dynasylan® 1189 helps to improve the shear resistance even when joints are immersed 22 days in Isopropanol:

- Melt Flow Ratio
- Reduced agglomeration is a consequence of improved dispersion of the inorganic in the organic matrix. Also the melt flow ratio of the compound is significantly increased.
- The better the choice of silane, the better the compatibilizing effect in the final compound (see diagram).
Positive impact of Dynasylan® on Melt-Flow Ratio (MFR)
- Melt-Flow Ratio (MFR) is increased by a factor of at least four through use of silanes.
- Melt flow ratio of a MDH / PP / PP-MAH compound with different silanes
Dynasylan® – Significant reduction of water uptake
- Water uptake is reduced by a factor of four through use of silanes.
