- Melissa Essential Oil (Melissa officinalis), also known as lemon balm oil, is obtained from the steam distillation of the fresh aerial parts of the Melissa officinalis plant. Melissa officinalis is a perennial herbaceous plant within the mint family, originally native to the south-central Europe region. The history of medicinal applications of Melissa as a plant and herb dates back over 2000 years to Greek and Roman times where it was used for promoting health and vitality via tinctures and teas, then later introduced into Spain in the 7th century, from where its popularity spread throughout Europe. Melissa Essential Oil possesses a beautiful earthy, grounded, grassy, lemon-like aroma. Melissa Oil is recognized today for its ability to aid in sleep, relaxation, and stress management, also for helping with mental clarity and consciousness when feeling clouded in the mind.
