AFCONA 5008 is an anionic/cationic wetting and dispersing additive that improves the wetting of pigment surfaces and organically treated bentonites. It reduces the interfacial tension between pigments or extenders and the vehicle, and also stabilizes the pigments through charge repulsion forces.

Chemical Family: Polyamides

Functions: Dispersant, Wetting Agent

End Uses: Primer, Solventborne Coating

Compatible Polymers & Resins: Alkyds, Alkyds (Long Oil), Alkyds (Medium Oil), Chlorinated Rubbers, Epoxies (EP), Nitrocellulose

Features & Benefits

Product Properties

AFCONA-5008 reduces the interfacial tension between pigments or extenders and the vehicle. It stabilizes the pigments through electrical charge repulsion forces. AFCONA – 5008 has the following special properties:

  • AFCONA – 5008 is very compatible; it can be used in all resin systems, ranging from nonpolar to highly polar systems.
  • This product is often used in primer and some decorative paint. It also widely used in marine and heavy duty paints as these systems do not require very high gloss finishes, and the chemical and physical properties are more important than the appearance.
  • Using AFCONA – 5008 will decrease pigment sedimentation, because it will encourage hydrogen bond formation in the system. However, AFCONA – 5066 and AFCONA – 5071 may offer better anti - settling properties.
  • AFCONA-5008 offers the following advantages when dispersing organically treated Bentonites: -shorter dispersion time -easier handling of the Bentonite gel -improved storage stability

Note: AFCONA – 5008 will become slightly hazy at temperatures below 5° C. This will not influence the performance of the product.

Applications & Uses

Addition and Dosage
  • 0.2 - 2.0% based on inorganic pigments
  • 2.0 - 5.0% based on organic pigments
  • For Bentonite gels use 30 - 50% based on the Bentonites
Incorporation

When used in mill-bases, add before grinding. In Bentonite dispersions use as follows:

  • 85-87 parts of solvent
  • 10 parts of Bentonite
  • 5 - 3 parts of AFCONA-5008
