Product Properties

AFCONA-5044 is an additive for pigment dispersion. It reduces the interfacial tension between the vehicle and pigments or extenders. It stabilizes the pigments through electrical charge repulsion forces. AFCONA – 5044 has the following special properties:

• AFCONA – 5044 is a very compatible polymer. It can be used in all resin systems, ranging from nonpolar to highly polar systems. This product does not influence the pot-life of two-pack systems.
• AFCONA – 5044 is often used in primer and some decorative paint. It is also widely used in marine and heavy duty paints as these paint systems do not require very high gloss finishing, and the chemical and physical properties are more important than the appearance.
• Using AFCONA – 5044 will decrease pigment sedimentation, because it encourages hydrogen bond formation in the system.
• In the dispersion of organically treated Bentonites, the use of AFCONA-5044 offers the following advantages: -shorter dispersion time -easier handling of the Bentonite gel -improved storage stability

Note: AFCONA – 5044 will become slightly hazy at temperatures below 5° C. This will not influence the performance of the product.

Addition and Dosage

• 0.2 - 2.0% based on inorganic pigments
• 2.0 - 5.0% based on organic pigments
• For Bentonite gels, use 30 - 50% on the Bentonites

Incorporation

When used in mill-bases, add before grinding. In Bentonite dispersions, use as follows:

• 85-87 parts of solvent
• 10 parts of Bentonite
• 5 - 3 parts of AFCONA-5044
