AFCONA 5209 is an anionic/cationic wetting and dispersing additive used to improve the wetting of pigment surfaces. AFCONA 5209 is the 100% version of AFCONA 5009. It reduces the interfacial tension between pigments or extenders and the vehicle. It stabilizes the pigments through electrical charge repulsion forces.

Chemical Family: Polyamides

Functions: Dispersant, Wetting Agent

End Uses: Primer, Solventborne Coating

Compatible Polymers & Resins: Alkyds, Alkyds (Long Oil), Alkyds (Medium Oil), Epoxies (EP), Nitrocellulose, Polyurethanes (PU)

Product Properties

AFCONA - 5009. It reduces the interfacial tension between pigments or extenders and the vehicle. It stabilizes the pigments through electrical charge repulsion forces. AFCONA – 5209 has below special properties and recommended in below systems:

  • AFCONA – 5209 is an excellent choice for Bentonite gelling where it result in excellent anti-sagging and anti-settle without increase too much of the system viscosity. To ensure a good Bentonite gelling paste as descript above, AFCONA – 5209 must be incorporated before loading the Bentonite powder.
  • Often, AFCONA – 5209 is used in primer and some decorative paint. It also widely used in marine and heavy duty paints as these paint systems do not require very high gloss finishing and the chemical and physical properties are more important than the appearance.
  • Using AFCONA – 5209 will also decreased pigment sedimentation, because it will induce hydrogen bond formation in the system. However, for better anti-settling products like AFCONA – 5066 and AFCONA – 5071 will perform much better.
  • AFCONA – 5209 are best in long oil, medium oil, short oil, NC, TPA, Acid curing, polyurethane and epoxy system.

Note: AFCONA – 5209 will become slightly hazy at temperatures below 5° C. It will form crystallization if store at temperature below 2C. Upon reheat, this will not influence the quality.

Applications & Uses

Addition and Dosage
  • 0.2 - 2.0% based on inorganic pigments
  • 2.0 - 5.0% based on organic pigments

Bentonite Gelling

  • 87-88 parts of solvent
  • 3 - 2 parts of AFCONA-5209 (must load in and homogenously disperse in the solvent part before loading the Bentonite powder)
  • 10 parts of Bentonite
Incorporation

When used in mill-bases, add before grinding. For Bentonite gelling preparation, please see above recommended formulation and processing procedure.
