The flowers of the Ylang Ylang tree are harvested every morning by local women and then distilled on the same day for a period of 24 hours. Blue Tansy is a yellow flowering plant native to Morocco near the Mediterranean Sea. This plant gradually disappeared due to excessive harvesting of wild plants. In order to ensure its safeguarding, Malagassi chose to act for the blue tansy by installing crops where we built strong relationships with our farmers. Blue tansy essential oil is produced through the steam distillation of the aerial parts of the plants. Our trees of Calophyllus are growing on a very long (8km) and thin strip of land located between the Indian Ocean and the Laguna of Loharano. The high density of these trees creates a natural barrier thereby protecting the whole laguna ecosystem from the strong salty wind and water coming from the Ocean. Without these trees this area would be destroyed and eaten completely by the ocean. Katrafay is a medium size tree (max 15m) endemic from Madagascar. It grows in the dry and dense forests of the south west region of the country. Its essential oil is produced after distillation of the bark. As for the Katrafay essential oil we use non-destructive harvesting methods which consist in peeling-off the bark on one side of the tree that allows a full recovery. Using this method protects the ecosystem while producing a better quality of essential oil (the bigger the tree the better the essential oil). The yield of Katrafay is very low (0.4%-0.6%).
