- Tangerines, which are part of the Rutaceae family, likely originated in Southeast Asia and have since spread to subtropical areas around the world. Tangerines have been cultivated for over 3,000 years in Japan, China, and Djibouti. Its name comes from a place called Tangier in Morocco, which is the port where the first tangerines arrived in Europe during the 1800s. who now are a large producer of this oil. Tangerine Essential Oil comes from the peel of the Tangerine fruit which is Cold Pressed. Being very similar to Mandarin and Bitter Orange, the Tangerine is a variation of these fruits. Tangerine shares the same botanical name as Mandarin (Citrus reticulata). Tangerine is typically fresh, tangy and sweet. With only subtle differences, it smells much like Mandarin. In comparison to Sweet Orange, Tangerine is lighter with sweeter notes. Like the fresh fruit Tangerine oil is loved by children and adults alike, with its delightfully sweet aroma that can create a happy, contented mindset. In Chinese Medicine, the tangerine peel is called, “Chen Pi,” and it is highly used in treating digestive disorders such as stomach upset, diarrhea, indigestion, and vomiting. The tangerine peel is also believed to control, reconcile and stabilize the flow of energy or Qi of the body.
