Harcros Chemicals Antifoam 10 Food Grade

Harcros Chemicals Antifoam 10 Food Grade is a 10% antifoam emulsion of polydimethylsiloxane designed for defoaming aqueous systems. It is exceptionally easy to dilute and disperse. This product maintains its effectiveness at temperatures up to boiling. Although designed primarily for food applications, it can also be used in many industrial processes. For effective defoaming, concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 ppm are required.

Diluting the Antifoam

AF-10 FG disperses readily in aqueous systems. The emulsion can be added directly to the foamer with only mild agitation to thoroughly disperse. For use in systems where maximum efficiency is desired the silicone emulsion should be pre-diluted with water before being added to the foamer. If it is necessary to store the diluted material for longer than 8 hours it should be frequently agitated.

Regulatory & Compliance

Regulatory Information

Food Additive Status

  • AF-10 FG has been used in food related applications under FDA regulation 21 CFR 173.340 as a direct food additive at levels up to 10 ppm silicone solids.
  • Generally, it has been found to comply with the following regulations for use as an indirect additive in the manufacture of food packaging components or food contact surfaces: 175.105, 175.125, 176.170, 176.180, 176.200, 176.210, 177.1200, 177.2260, 177.2800, 177.3120.

Technical Details & Test Data

Processing Guidelines

Concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 ppm have proved effective in most foaming systems. A good starting point is about 25 parts antifoam per million parts foamer. The results obtained at this concentration will indicate whether to increase or decrease the amount of antifoam.

Storage & Handling Information
  • This product exhibits excellent storage stability when proper handling procedures are followed. As with most emulsions, storage in a cool place (60-75F max.) in a tightly closed container will provide maximum shelf life. Under these conditions, it has a minimum shelf life of one year.
  • Because it contains water, it should be protected from freezing. Repeated freezing may damage the container or may separate the emulsion rendering it unsuitable for use.
