- The Lime tree is a subtropical and tropical evergreen, a bushy tree that grows up to 12 feet and originated from South East Asia but now grows well in Southern Florida, Egypt, India Mexica and the West Indies. The essential oil is produced from the peel of the fruit. Limes were used famously by British sailors to prevent scurvy as it happens to be an excellent source of vitamin C, a nutrient not readily available to sailors during this period. This was considered a secret of the British Navy for many years, as their sailors were able to stay at sea for longer periods of time without being made ill from scurvy. Lime has a zesty, citrusy, sweet and fruity-lime aroma. Lime fruit is similar in many ways to lemon, and the essential oils of both have a very sweet citrus smell to them and have similar uses in aromatherapy. Lime essential oil is known for brightening moods, for clearing acne and cellulite, it is also known to help with breathing, for those with bronchitis. Lime is also disinfecting and cleansing, it makes for an excellent bath additive or before shower scrub. Some more traditional uses: to purify the air, for alertness, to relieve coughs or congestion, for uplifting and cheering the spirit, to heal colds, flu, or inflammations. Lime may cause skin sensitivity to bright sunlight.
