ICL Phosphate Specialty - HALOX® Company Logo
HALOX® RC-980 is an organic additive designed to convert red rust to black iron oxide. It can be used in slightly acidic waterborne vinyl or PVDC binders applied to rusted steel substrates. It converts the rust within minutes of the coating application and forms a black iron oxide barrier that can be further top-coated with water or solvent-based paints. It does not contain tannic acid, oxime chelates, phosphates, or phosphoric acid.

Functions: Rust Converter

Chemical Family: Diols, Glycols

End Uses: 1K (1 component) Coating, Latex, Solventborne Coating, Waterborne Coating

Compatible Polymers & Resins: Acrylics, Epoxies (EP), Polyvinylidene Chloride (PVDC)

Features: Cost Effective, Salt Spray Resistance

Synonyms: (±)-1,2-Propanediol, (±)-Propylene glycol, (RS)-1,2-Propanediol, 1,2-(RS)-Propanediol, 1,2-Dihydroxypropane, 1,2-Propanediol, 1,2-Propylene glycol, 2-Hydroxypropanol, 2,3-Propanediol, DL-1,2-Propanediol, dl-Propylene glycol, Isopropylene glycol, Methylethyl glycol, Methylethylene glycol, Monopropylene glycol, NSC 69860, α-Propylene glycol

Features
HALOX® RC-980 is a low-odor, water misciblepaint additive which converts red rust to black iron oxide.
Advantages
HALOX® RC-980 does not contain tannic acid or phosphoric acid. It can be post-added to most vinylidene chloride binders used in rust conversion primers. It is less soluble and less acidic (pH 4-6) than tannic acid. HALOX® RC-980 provides better salt spray and cyclic corrosion performance and is non-flammable.

Formulation Tips & Additional Guidelines

Water Based Paint : It is recommended that you adjust the pH of the resin to pH 3.0 to 4.0 before adding it to the grind to avoid shock. HALOX® RC-980 has a pH between 3.5 and 4.5. Do not pre-mix the resin with co-solvent as this may cause gellation.

Filler Pigments : Using TiO2 in rust converter formulations will cause the black iron oxide to appear grayish in color since TiO2 has a high refractive index. Avoid CaCO3 or any fillers which are unstable under acidic (pH < 6) conditions.

Stability : PVDC resins are not inherently heat stable. Check the stability of the paint formulations periodically at room temperature. Consult your resin supplier for further guidelines on stabilizing PVDC paints. As with any other additives, you should monitor the stability of HALOX® RC-980 in your paint formulation.

Compatibility : HALOX® RC-980 is compatible with most acidic based paints. We do recommend you always check compatibility with your formulation.

Foaming : If foaming occurs, HALOX® recommends testing Foamaster NXZ (Cognis), Additol VXW 6210N (Cytec), or Surfynol 104A (Air Products).

Solvent Based Paint : When working with alkyds such as Reichhold’s Beckosol 11-035 you may see longer dry times with HALOX® RC-980. HALOX® suggests bumping up your drier package to compensate for this and speed up oxidative drying. Long oil alkyds are NOT recommended when using HALOX® RC-980.

Application : Rust converter paints can be applied by brush or spray depending on the viscosity of the final paint. HALOX® recommends you apply at least 75 microns of the rust converter paint containing HALOX® RC-980.

Substrate Preparation : Brush off loose rust and mill scale. This will allow the primer to bond more effectively to the rusted surface. Substrates: HALOX® RC-980 will convert rust only on corroded or rusty steel.

Applications
