AEROSIL® R 816

1 of 33 products in this brand
AEROSIL® R 816 fumed silica powder offers an alternative technology to stabilize oil/water emulsions. Due to the special surface modification of the silica both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties are introduced in just one material. This enables AEROSIL® R 816 to enrich at oil/water interfaces and thereby stabilize oil droplets in a continuous water phase by the Pickering effect.Furthermore, AEROSIL® R 816 brings structure to the continuous water phase and increases its viscosity which limits the mobility of the oil droplets, thereby providing for even more emulsion stability.

Features & Benefits

AEROSIL® R 816 Benefits

Many disinfectant gels are based on Carbomer as viscosity builder. The gels are shear thinning, which provides easy pouring and proper handling when applied on the skin. With the shortage of Carbomer, producers are seeking alternatives. By using AEROSIL® R 816, the Carbomer concentration of an app. 60% alcohol containing disinfectant gel can significantly be reduced (50%) while maintaining the viscosity of the gel:

  • Mix AEROSIL® R 816 with water
  • Add Carbomer and stir until homogeneous
  • Add Ethanol 75%
  • Neutralize with Triethanol amin (99%) and stir until uniform; pH 6,2-6,9
  • Add glycerin

AEROSIL® Fumed Silica in Lubricating Greases

AEROSIL® fumed silica helps to build a stable matrix to increase viscosity and suppress oil separation in lubricating greases. It can be used in the following systems:

  • In non-soap greases, used in high-temperature applications up to 230° C as well as for extreme-pressure and multipurpose greases.
  • In soap greases, thickened by fatty acid soaps of lithium, calcium, sodium or aluminum, AEROSIL® fumed silica can be used to further improve the performance of the lubricating grease.
  • Hydrophilic fumed silica provides optimized thickening effects in non-polar oils.
  • Hydrophobic fumed silica provides viscosity control and increased water repellency in semi-polar to polar oils.
  • The surface area of the silica and the volume fraction of the silica in the fi nal mass play a role in the long term storage and heat stability.
Premium Product Recommendations

Provides overall the best effects in most base oil systems and gives outstanding stability.

Lubricating Grease Applications

The use of AEROSIL® fumed silica is recommended for lubricating greases used in industrial applications, automotive, electrical as well as food grade.

  • Electrical - Offers rheology control as well as water resistance.
  • Industrial - Offers rheology control as well as excellent oxidation resistance against water and chemicals.
  • Automotive - Offers rheology control as well as excellent oxidation resistance against water and chemicals.
  • Food - Hydrophilic AEROSIL® are generally recognized as safe (GRAS; direct food contact). Offers rheology control as well as water resistance
